Unreal (Attempt #2)

Alfred Nobel

Jacques Yves Cousteau

The Black Box

While looking at the Black Box- The Concealed Room by Erika Kruger I became interested in the creators second project “The Disconnected Shadow”. I found that the design had some similarities to my design for Alfred Nobel’s laboratory. Kruger’s design shows the use of repetitive shapes and lines to create and accentuate shadows. My design also uses the repetition of form. This image shows the final design Kruger created for her “The Disconnected Shadow’ project. The repetition of forms shown here helps to create a vector, which leads people through a certain direction. The use of thinner, disconnected forms creates a unique shadow of lines. As the light source moves further from the panels, shadows will become more distorted. A solid form would not allow for the same shadow distortion or allow light to penetrate through the internal space in the same manner. For Alfred Nobel’s laboratory design, similarly to Kruger’s design, I wanted to shadows, which were detached and unique.

Final Design

Upper Gallery
Fabrication
Tracey Moffat 'Something More'Fabrication is linked with creation, both natural and artificial. I decided to use elements of both. I looked into birth as the basis of natural creation to create the form of the studio. For artificial creation, I decided to focus on the man made creation of materials and the idea of man made perfection. The contradiction of these two concepts of fabrication can be seen through the opposing forms of natural free-formed shapes and the artificial ideal of linearity.

Infinity
Rosalie Gascoigne 'White City'
Infinity is the concept of something that will continue on perpetually. To create the idea of infinity in the artist studio, I decided to form an illusion of infinity through line and vectors. The idea of infinity was created through the continuation and repetition of lines throughout the form and the sense of not being able to see where things begin and end.
